Newton Aycliffe faced the first struggle since joining the Northern League. A poor start left the club marooned at the bottom and, despite wins over the likes of West Auckland and Darlington, were facing relegation with just six games to go. But five wins in those games propelled the side up the table to a safe 17th place finish.
